Mumbai was rocked by an alarming incident in which a notorious fraudster was arrested for sexual harassment and defrauding a 29-year-old businesswoman of nearly Rs 70 lakh. The accused, Siddharth Dilip Mehta, had multiple fraud cases registered against him at Juhu, Khar police station, and the Economic Offences Wing.
The complainant, a resident of Andheri who runs a private company related to the film industry, was introduced to the 43-year-old accused through mutual friends in December 2022. Mehta had conned the woman into believing he was a stock market broker and a resident of Versova.
At first, the two developed a friendship which eventually turned into a romantic relationship. Unfortunately, Mehta took advantage of this relationship and sexually assaulted the complainant on multiple occasions. To add to her woes, he persuaded her to invest in the stock market, promising to double her invested amount. Believing his assurances, she gradually invested a staggering Rs 70 lakh.
Initially, Mehta provided the victim with satisfactory returns, however, he later stopped paying her any money. In May, he started avoiding her inquiries about their marriage plans and soon disappeared without a trace.
Finally, after discovering Mehta's deceit, she lodged a complaint against him with the Oshiwara Police in May. Following a thorough investigation, the police charged him with sexual harassment, cheating, misbehavior, and intimidation. In an effort to evade the cops, Mehta had absconded. However, he was apprehended by the Crime Branch officials of Bandra Unit 9 on Friday in Girgaon and handed over to the Oshiwara police for further interrogation.
He has since been arrested and remanded to police custody for four days by the local court. Given Mehta's notorious history, the police suspect his arrest may help solve other similar incidents.
