Nike has recently unveiled its latest Kobe Brand shoe design, the Kobe 8 Protro Halo, which is set to be released on what would have been the basketball icon's 45th birthday. The shoe is designed by Kobe's widow, Vanessa, and Nike has partnered with the SNKRS app as well as "select global retailers" to release the shoe.
Black Enterprise reported that Nike is sticking with their strategy of limited releases for commemorative shoes. They are also hosting a tournament in Los Angeles in front of the Lakers Crypto.com Arena on August 23-24. This tournament, called the Mamba League Invitational, will feature eight teams of the top high school players in the LA area, irrespective of gender.
According to Nike's press release, Vanessa Bryant designed and created the Halo shoe concept to honor Kobe on his birthday every year. Nike first started working with Kobe on the Kobe Brand 8 line back in 2012. The shoe was designed to be the lightest design that Nike had produced for the Laker legend in accordance with his wishes that the shoe should feel like an extension of his foot.
To promote the collaboration, Vanessa Bryant posted a design of a shoe touching a basketball on Instagram. She captioned the post with, “Kobe 8 “Halo” 8.23.23
This will be one of many Kobe 8 “Halo” styles coming soon.”
Nike also took to Twitter to promote the shoe, posting an image of two shoes with the caption, “The legacy continues. The Kobe Protro 8 ‘Halo’ marks the continuation of a storied legacy, pairing a triple white colorway with the iconic Kobe 8 silhouette, embodying the timelessness of an icon never forgotten.” They announced that the shoes will be available globally on August 23 in SNKRS.
