Nigel Farage was the surprise winner of News Presenter of the Year at the Television & Radio Industries Club Awards on Tuesday night. The former UKIP leader and GB News contributor was heckled and booed when he stepped up to accept the award, which was voted on by the public.
Farage was up against some tough competition, including Piers Morgan, Susanna Reid, Eamonn Holmes and Stephen Dixon. Despite this, he came out on top, and had a few words to say about it in his acceptance speech.
“GB News set out to be the People’s Channel and I’m incredibly proud of that," he said. "The establishment media doesn’t always like it – we’re not for them – but this award shows that the people do. I am really rather proud to have this because I’m a new boy – I have only been doing this for a couple of years. So a huge thank to all those good, ordinary folk who live outside the M25 for voting for me.”
However, the audience made their displeasure known as Farage spoke, with heckles and boos echoing throughout the Grosvenor House hotel. In response, he said: “Please keep the abuse coming, because it says a lot more about you than about me.”
Farage's award was just one of many given out at the event. Other winners included Bradley Walsh for TV Personality, Piers Morgan for Interview of the Year, That Peter Crouch Podcast for Podcast of the Year, Roman Kemp for Radio Personality and Danielle Harold for Soap Actor.
This isn't the first time Farage has caused a stir. In April 2021, he left GB News viewers ‘wanting to vomit’ after doing a strip tease to Right Said Fred’s song ‘I’m Too Sexy…’ live on air. On this occasion, however, his antics had a much more serious impact - and one that was felt by the entire audience.
