New streaming platform BLKFAM is the first to cater specifically to black families.
BLKFAM, the first-ever Black-owned and Black-focused family streaming service, is officially launching today with the goal to entertain, educate, and celebrate Black audiences through authentic and inclusive content. Spearheaded by media veteran Larry Adams and in partnership with Whoopi Goldberg, BLKFAM aims to fill a gap in the streaming world by providing a platform for Black viewers who feel misrepresented in mainstream media.

The service boasts an extensive content library, featuring over 20 syndicated series, 1000+ hours of new diverse animation, and hundreds of music content. According to a press release, BLKFAM offers a wide range of content, including news, wellness, history, animation, sitcoms, and reality shows. In addition, the streaming service has ten original shows currently in development, showcasing a variety of Black experiences and voices.

Adams, the founder of BLKFAM, shared his motivation for creating the service, stating, "Black culture and content are often stereotyped, siloed, or dismissed. I wanted to create a platform where my children and I could be entertained without facing these daily biases." By curating authentic and data-backed content primarily from Black storytellers, BLKFAM aims to provide a space where Black families can feel fully represented.

A Nielsen report revealed that Black Americans spend more time consuming media than any other population in the United States. Additionally, Black consumers are more likely to access multiple streaming services, with 73% paying for three or more, compared to the average of 60% across all audiences. This highlights the demand for services like BLKFAM that cater to marginalized communities.

Equity partners Whoopi Goldberg and Whoop, Inc. President Tom Leonardis are also involved in the creative direction of BLKFAM. Goldberg, an EGOT-winning actress and television host, expressed her excitement about the partnership, stating, "I am honored to assist in the creative direction of curated diverse content for Black culture to be brought to broader audiences."

BLKFAM has also partnered with content providers Playwatch Kids and ATTN to develop animation and documentary-style shows featuring ethnic and culturally diverse characters. Playwatch, Inc. President Jimmy Jenkins shared his enthusiasm for this collaboration, stating, "We are extremely excited to be a part of this historic moment for families across the globe."

The streaming service is now available across multiple platforms, including iOS, Android, Amazon Prime Video Channels, Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, YouTube TV, Samsung Smart TVs, Vizio, and LG. Through its launch, BLKFAM aims to amplify the demand for services that uplift and empower marginalized groups. This announcement is just one of many exciting partnerships for BLKFAM, including its recent collaboration with Blavity for the 'In The Black Network' streaming service.
