Naveen Patnaik regretful of Pandian criticism, praises his performance.
Bhubaneswar: On Saturday, BJD leader Naveen Patnaik expressed his disappointment with the criticism directed towards his aide VK Pandian for the party's defeat in the Odisha Assembly elections. He defended Pandian's actions, stating that he did an "excellent job" in his role.

Despite this, Patnaik was quick to clarify that Pandian, a former bureaucrat from Tamil Nadu, was not being groomed as his successor. He firmly believes that the people of Odisha have the right to decide who will take his place in the future.

Patnaik gracefully accepted the party's defeat in the recent elections and assured the public that he will continue to serve the state in any way possible. In an interview with PTI, he addressed the criticism surrounding Pandian, stating, "It's unfortunate that some have criticized him. He joined the party without holding any official position and did not contest in any constituency. When asked about my successor, I have always made it clear that it is not Pandian. The people of Odisha will decide who will lead them next."

He also commended Pandian for his hard work and dedication over the past 10 years, especially during challenging times such as cyclones and the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized that Pandian's integrity and honesty should be remembered and appreciated.

Patnaik's statement comes in the midst of some party members expressing discontent towards Pandian following the election results.

On the topic of his health, Patnaik assured the public that he is in good condition, stating, "My health has always been fine and will continue to be so. I conducted a rigorous campaign last month, even in the heat. That should speak for itself."

Reflecting on the party's defeat, he said, "We have always strived to do our best and have much to be proud of in both our government and party. In a democracy, one must accept both victories and defeats. We must gracefully accept the verdict of the people."

He added, "The 4.5 crore people of Odisha are my family and I will continue to serve them in any way I can." He expressed his deep gratitude for the support and blessings he has received from the people of Odisha throughout his political career.

In the recent Assembly elections, the BJP claimed victory, ending BJD's 24-year rule, by securing 78 out of the 147 seats. The BJD, on the other hand, won 51 seats, while the Congress and CPI won 14 and one seats, respectively. The BJP also emerged victorious in all 20 Lok Sabha seats in the state, while the Congress won one.
