On Thursday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu made a plea to the Centre for their support in completing the Polavaram project as quickly as possible. He was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan as they met with Union Minister of Jal Shakti C. R. Patil in New Delhi.
In a post on social media platform 'X', CM Naidu shared that they had requested reimbursement for the expenses incurred in constructing the Polavaram Left and Right canals, and asked for all the necessary aid to expedite the project. He also mentioned their discussions with Union Minister Patil regarding the Polavaram Banakacherla Link project, which aims to transfer 200 TMC of floodwater from the Godavari river to Banakacherla through a link canal.
As per the Chief Minister, the Banakacherla Link Project will not only make the state drought-proof, but also provide drinking water to 80 lakh people, irrigate 3 lakh hectares of new land, supplement 9.14 lakh hectares, and allocate 20 TMC of water to industries. CM Naidu and Pawan Kalyan were in the national capital to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Delhi's new Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta.
During their visit, CM Naidu is expected to have discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister for Agriculture Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The topics of discussion will include various projects and other matters pertaining to the state. The Chief Minister is also planning to address the issues faced by chilli farmers with Union Minister Chouhan.
CM Naidu has previously written multiple letters to the Centre highlighting the challenges faced by chilli farmers. This time, he plans to directly bring it to the attention of the Union Minister and request assistance from the Central government. As the TDP, Naidu's party, is a key partner in the BJP-led NDA government, he expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Shah for sanctioning Rs 608.08 crore for the state under disaster and flood relief.
The High-Level Committee, headed by Home Minister Shah, has approved Rs 1,554.99 crore of additional Central assistance under the National Disaster Response Fund to five states affected by floods, landslides, and cyclonic storms last year.
