Jack Lisowski produced an incredible feat of snooker to defeat Shaun Murphy in their second round match of the British Open. After a draw reminiscent of the FA Cup, the contest in Cheltenham did not disappoint with both players showcasing their talent.
The game started off with Lisowski quickly taking the lead with breaks of 108 and 67. Murphy then surged back, making 111, 79 and 111 again. Jackpot managed to force a decider with a 101 clearance, leading to a spectacular finish. Murphy made 62 before losing position and playing safe, only to be beaten by a miraculous long red and black combination from Lisowski, who sunk 63 and clinched the frame and the match on the final ball.
Murphy was gracious in defeat, telling ITV: “It’s one of the best best of sevens I’ve ever been involved in. What a match, what a finish, what a talent, what a player.” He went on to say, “I was begging him to go for the long red and begging him to try to pot the black. It was one of the best clearances I’ve ever seen.”
Lisowski himself felt he had little choice but to take on the two difficult shots, and was glad he showed the bottle which he is sometimes criticised for lacking. He said, ”At 2-0 up I was thinking, maybe I have bottled this because I was playing really well. Those two shots, what are they 1 in 10? To do that at 3-3 and then dish them up. Yeah…nice.”
Murphy, on the other hand, was still upbeat after his fine performance, saying, “If I play like that for the rest of the season I think I’ll be in the winners’ enclosure a couple of times. There are lots of positives to take.”
Lisowski will now face either Matt Selt or Zak Surety in the last 32. With the British Open wide open, it is certainly exciting to see who will come out on top.
