The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, expressed her disappointment on Saturday regarding the low turnout at a tribal community event near Bagdogra airport in Siliguri. She questioned the decision to change the venue from Bidhannagar and also noted the absence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her ministers during her visit. In a gathering, President Murmu mentioned that usually when the President visits, the Chief Minister should be present to welcome them, along with other ministers.
However, this was not the case during her visit. She also acknowledged that the Governor was unable to attend due to a change in schedule, but she had still made the effort to come. Despite the circumstances, she thanked those who were present at the event.
The President also expressed her belief that the event would have been more successful if it had taken place at Bidhannagar. She explained that the venue had more space and could accommodate a larger number of people. She questioned the state administration's decision to not allow the event to take place there and suggested that perhaps the government was not interested in the welfare of the tribal community.
President Murmu also mentioned that Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister, is like her younger sister and she herself is a daughter of Bengal. She expressed her confusion as to why she was not allowed to visit the originally planned venue and wondered if the Chief Minister was upset about something. However, she stated that it did not matter and wished everyone well.
The President also highlighted the challenges faced in organizing such events and stated that it seemed like there were some who did not want the Santals (tribal community) to progress, learn and come together. Originally, President Murmu was invited to the annual programme at Bidhannagar in Siliguri. However, due to security and logistical reasons, the venue was shifted to Goshaipur near Bagdogra airport.
When the President arrived at the new venue, only a few people were present. The only representative from the state government was Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb, who received her at the airport. It is customary for the Chief Minister or a minister to receive the President, but in this case, no one was present.
Meanwhile, in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee continued her sit-in protest for the second day against the alleged deletion of names from the electoral rolls in West Bengal. This may have been one of the reasons why she was not able to attend the event in Siliguri. In conclusion, the event at Bagdogra airport did not go as planned, and President Murmu expressed her disappointment at the low turnout and the absence of the state government representatives.
However, she remained gracious and thanked those who were present, while also expressing her concerns about the welfare of the tribal community.
