Bhubaneswar: On Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the Odisha Assembly, where she began her political journey and expressed her nostalgia and gratitude towards the House. She encouraged the members to set an example for the people through their actions and behavior.
As a former member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, Murmu couldn't help but feel emotional as she addressed the House as the President of India. She shared, "This is like a homecoming for me. The Odisha Assembly has been my guiding light and has taught me everything. I owe my success to this House, the blessings of the people, and the grace of Lord Jagannath."
Having addressed various assemblies in India and abroad, Murmu noted the uniqueness of speaking in the Odisha Assembly, which reminded her of her past and the foundation of her political career. She humbly acknowledged her humble background and how the House taught her the art of speaking, the importance of words, and how to conduct herself in different situations.
Recalling her first election to the Odisha Assembly in 2000 from Rainrangpur constituency in Mayurbhanj district, Murmu fondly mentioned some of her fellow members who also began their political journey alongside her, such as Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and the current Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
Emphasizing on the importance of putting the nation first, Murmu urged the newly elected MLAs to maintain a balance between their words and actions. She reminded them that their actions are being closely watched by the people and they should strive to work for the betterment of the poorest of the poor, as this is the true essence of 'Antorday'.
The President highlighted the crucial role of the people in a democracy and stated that their happiness should be the ultimate goal for the government. She encouraged the MLAs to fulfill the aspirations and hopes of the people.
Murmu also took the opportunity to showcase India's achievements in various fields such as economy, space science, technology, and artificial intelligence, and how other countries have placed their trust in India's capabilities. She proudly declared India as a 'Viksit Bharat' or a developed nation.
The President also commended the Odisha government for their initiatives such as the 'Subhadra Yojana' for women's financial assistance and subsidies for paddy farmers. She also praised the joint efforts of the Centre and the State in developing the industrial sector in Odisha.
The assembly welcomed Murmu, who they fondly referred to as the 'daughter of the soil'. The Speaker Surama Padhy extended her formal congratulations, while the Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik expressed his pride in having Murmu address the House.
Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati also acknowledged the President's inspiring journey and stated that her presence in the House was a historic moment. The day ended on a positive note as everyone looked forward to the progress and development of Odisha.
