In an effort to alleviate the chronic traffic congestion along Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) has recently announced their plans to construct a 4.2-km flyover. This project, estimated to cost around Rs 1,635 crore, will stretch from Kalpana Talkies in Kurla West to Pankhe Shah Baba Dargah in Ghatkopar West. The construction is expected to be completed within the next three years, making it a much-awaited solution for the busy corridor.
The decision to build this flyover was prompted by the constant build-up of traffic at major junctions along the LBS Marg, particularly at the Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road, Ghatkopar Station Road, and Sant Narsi Mehta Road. In addition, the smaller cross-roads that feed into this stretch only add to the congestion. To address this issue, the BMC has proposed the construction of a two-way, four-lane flyover, which is expected to significantly improve vehicular movement in the area.
According to a civic official, this project will not only ease the traffic at major junctions, but also at smaller intersections such as Shreyas Junction on the AGLR, the junction near Sarvodaya Hospital, and the junction opposite the BMC yard at Sant Narsi Mehta Road. As the flyover will be built above the Metro line and the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation bridge connecting Ghatkopar East and West, the design will be complex and will require careful integration of all these structures.
Interested contractors can submit their bids for this project by December 6, with a pre-bid meeting scheduled for November 21 at the BMC headquarters. This flyover is also expected to improve access to the Eastern Express Highway, Powai, and the western suburbs, providing easier travel routes for motorists heading north.
According to Kurla-based activist Anil Galgali, this flyover will greatly benefit commuters by providing easier access to the Eastern Express Highway via the Vikhroli ROB, as well as connecting to other major roads such as the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road.
