A mother was astounded when her nine-year-old son informed her that he had found an undetonated World War II grenade in the garden.

George Peniston-Bird from Yarcombe, in East Devon, was thrilled to come across what looked like a small explosive as he was searching for bones.

Céline Peniston-Bird confessed she was still dazed when George ran into the bedroom to tell her about his find.

Céline declared to DevonLive: ‘I was completely out of it after a late night and he ran into the bedroom and was like “You need to wake up, I discovered a grenade!”

‘And I said, “Yeah, of course you did, that’s terrific, why don’t you go and take a photo of it,” like all mothers do and assumed, “That’s just going to be some junk”.

‘He reentered the house with his iPad, held it up to me and I was so drowsy and said, “Oh... that might actually be a grenade.”‘

She phoned 101 and felt sheepish at first, assuming it was probably nothing too risky but the operator immediately put her through to 999.

After detailing the situation to 999, the police arrived at their residence around 20 minutes later.

A mother was shocked when her nine-year-old son, George Peniston-Bird, from Yarcombe, East Devon, announced he had found a live World War II grenade in their garden.

Céline Peniston-Bird was still drowsy when George came bursting into the bedroom to inform her of his discovery.

She recounted to DevonLive, “He came running into the bedroom and was like ‘You’ve got to wake up, I’ve found a grenade!’ And I went, ‘Oh yeah absolutely, I’m sure you have, that’s fantastic, why don’t you go and take a picture of it.’”

After she called 101 and then 999, police arrived at their home within twenty minutes and confirmed that it appeared to be a grenade.

The 721 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squadron, Royal Logistics Corps, from Tidworth Camp in Wiltshire, came to take an X-ray of the grenade and determined it was live.

The grenade was then detonated in a nearby field, much to George's excitement.

He had been looking for bones when he stumbled upon the explosive.

Céline said, “He absolutely loves bones and he’d gone out looking for bones and he was looking along the edge of a wall on the ground in the orchard. As he was walking along, he tripped over and went to stand back up and like a metre in front of him he’d gone, ‘Oh, that’s really cool.’”
