Unfortunately, the beloved Super Warner Bros. crossover fighter, MultiVersus, will soon be coming to an end. As history often repeats itself, this will be the second time that MultiVersus has bid farewell. Many have attempted to replicate the success of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. franchise, but none have been able to match its popularity or quality. Despite this, MultiVersus managed to stand out as one of the best.
The free-to-play platform fighter was first released in beta form in July of 2022 and was an immediate hit. However, as time went on, its popularity dwindled and the beta was eventually taken offline in June of 2023. But, with revamped gameplay mechanics and new features, the game made a comeback in May of last year.
Now, eight months later, Warner Bros. has announced that MultiVersus will be saying goodbye once again. In a statement from the developer, Player First Games, it was confirmed that the upcoming fifth season will be the last. This final season, starting on February 4 and ending on May 30 of 2025, will introduce two new characters, Aquaman and Lola Bunny, to the roster.
After May 30, all online features will be disabled and the game will be delisted. However, players will still be able to enjoy MultiVersus offline, either by playing solo against AI opponents or with up to three other players in local multiplayer. All they need to do is download the latest version of the game and log in at least once during the fifth season.
In addition, all real money transactions have been removed from the game as of today. Any in-game currency or character tokens that players have purchased can still be used until the end of the fifth season. And, the best part is, all content in the final season can be obtained through gameplay, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny who will be given as rewards for completing the battle pass and daily logins.
The team at Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games expressed their gratitude towards the MultiVersus community in their statement, saying, "We want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. All of us have poured our heart and soul into this game and we will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."
Some may point to MultiVersus' free-to-play model as the reason for its downfall, but the success of Brawlhalla proves that a live service platform fighter can have long-lasting success. However, Brawlhalla's popularity has been a slow burn since its release in 2017 and was likely a more cost-effective venture than MultiVersus.
To put things in perspective, in the past 24 hours, Brawlhalla had a concurrent peak of 13,998 players on Steam while MultiVersus only managed to reach 648 players. It's no surprise that MultiVersus is being shut down, especially since Warner Bros. admitted that the game underperformed last year and cost them $100 million.
This news comes right after the disappointment of another live service game from Warner Bros., Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. There have been mixed messages about whether the company will continue to pursue games as a service titles in the future. Only time will tell.
But, for now, let's take a moment to appreciate the fact that Superman and Bugs Bunny could have faced off in MultiVersus.
