Multimillion design firm boosted by diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives led by father and son.
John and Joshua Johnson are a father and son duo who are the proud owners of the highly successful design firm, Space Continuum. Their journey to success was greatly aided by implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within their business.

John, who had spent many years working in the corporate world, founded Space Continuum in 2016. He started the company as a contract furniture dealership and interior design firm. In an interview with AfroTech, John revealed that it was the demand for DEI in the corporate world that led to the establishment of his own business. As companies strived to meet diversity goals, they turned to John's services and it was this support that helped him kickstart his venture.

"The corporate clients were seeking ways to meet their initiatives and they approached me because of my experience and reputation in the market. They asked if I would consider becoming a dealer for MillerKnoll, and I gladly accepted," explained John.

As John transitioned to running his own dealership, he brought in his son, Joshua, to help with the operations. Joshua's background in technology and marketing brought a new perspective to the business and further solidified their position as a leading Black-owned business in the industry. John hopes that Joshua will take over the business once he retires.

"I've been around the furniture industry for a long time and I have a good understanding of how to meet goals. And as my father mentioned, there aren't many people like us in this field, so we have a unique perspective," shared Joshua, who currently holds the role of Vice President of Business Development. "When my father asked me to join the business, I was already familiar with it and saw many opportunities for growth and expansion."

The success of Space Continuum can be attributed in part to the DEI initiatives they have implemented. They have worked with high-profile clients such as Honda, Ford, and Harrah's Casino, which has helped them establish a strong presence in the industry.

"DEI is crucial in the world of entrepreneurship," emphasized Joshua. "We are aware of the prevalence of racism in corporations and government entities, and it's something that cannot be ignored. When we present our certifications and showcase our past successes, DEI plays a significant role in proving our capability to fulfill contracts."

In addition to their design services, Space Continuum has also expanded its offerings to include virtual reality design viewing and the distribution of electric vehicle charging stations. Their continuous growth and success serve as a testament to the importance of DEI in promoting diversity in various industries.

In a time where diversity and inclusion are at the forefront of conversations, the Johnsons' story is a reminder of the impact that DEI initiatives can have on minority businesses. Their journey serves as an inspiration for others to strive for success and make their mark in the corporate world.
