The tragic news of the death of Gemma Germeney, 31, and her two children Lilly Peden, eight, and Oliver Peden, four, has been confirmed by police. The family lost their lives following a fire that occurred at their house in Cambridge on Friday morning.
Not only did they lose their lives, but two beloved family pets are believed to have also perished in the blaze. More than 30 firefighters attended the two-storey maisonette on Sackville Close, King’s Hedges, after they were called just after 1am. Despite their efforts, the fire had already spread to the ground and first floors of the building.
Although the man taken to hospital after the fire has not been named, it is believed to be Gemma’s partner Scott Peden, the father of Lilly and Oliver. He remains in a critical condition.
Cambridgeshire Police spokesman commented on the tragedy, saying, “Our thoughts remain with the family, friends and the local community following this tragic incident. We are working alongside the fire service to establish the most probable cause of the fire.”
Area commander Stuart Smith expressed sadness at the incident, saying, “This is a devastating and deeply upsetting incident that will touch many people. Our thoughts are with the relatives, friends and neighbours of the family. It’s just heartbreaking.” He added, “A fire like this is one of the toughest incidents you can attend as a firefighter and we’re looking after the welfare of all those who responded to or supported this incident.”
