Keisha Schahaff and her daughter Anastasia Mayers are making history as the first mother-daughter duo, and the first people from the Caribbean to travel to space. AfroTech recently confirmed that they would be participating in the second ever commercial space flight, aboard the “Galactic 02”.
Keisha, a wellness coach, said she's always had a fascination with space travel. This experience is a testament to the fact that anyone can reach for the stars.
"The fact that I'm here, the first from Antigua to venture to space, shows that space is becoming more accessible," she said.
The mother-daughter duo were selected to take part in the space flight through a draw sponsored by Space For Humanity. The nonprofit was founded in 2017 to make space exploration accessible to people from all backgrounds.
While Virgin Galactic's tickets usually cost anywhere between $250k-$450k, Space For Humanity's mission has made it possible for Keisha and Anastasia to fulfil their dreams of space travel.
Anastasia is not only making history for her home country, but for her age group as well. The sophomore university student will be the second-youngest voyager to ever go to space. She is currently studying philosophy and physics at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, and this trip will be a great addition to her studies.
The inclusion of two black women in this mission is a reminder that life-changing experiences like this are within reach for anyone who dares to pursue them. The 90-minute flight will no doubt be an unforgettable one, with speeds reaching as high as 2,600 miles per hour.
It's clear that the Schahaff family is paving the way for the next generation. Though only time will tell, this mission might be the start of a new era of diversity in space exploration.
