Morgan State University has recently announced their plans for a brand new Science and Research Complex. This $342 million project is expected to open in Fall 2027 and will be led by three respected architectural firms: Moody Nolan, Inc., Cannon Design, and K. Dixon Architecture. This is part of a long-term mission to turn Morgan State into a renowned research institution.
The 8-story building will stand tall at 246,000 square feet, and be located in close proximity to E. Cold Spring Lane and Stadium Way. President David K. Wilson expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, “This new Science and Research Complex represents a decade-long journey to deliver a world-class academic and research facility that is commensurate with the research capacity and output that is representative of this very consequential institution.”
This news comes in the wake of Wilson’s efforts to bolster Morgan State’s reputation and make it the equal of the nation’s top Ivy League schools. He declared to the Baltimore Business Journal, “Our university is raising its hand and saying this is our time for Morgan to bellow across the state and nation that ‘This is how a public anchor institution can lead to a transformation of our city.’”
In order to turn his vision into reality, Wilson needed the support of the state. While his predecessors had failed to secure the necessary funding, Wilson has been successful in obtaining more endowments from the state for several historically Black colleges and universities in Maryland. This has allowed Morgan State to receive federal and private contracts, as well as more than $40 million in research awards during the first half of 2023.
It's clear that President Wilson is dedicated to making a positive change for Morgan State University. Thanks to his hard work, the university now has the resources needed to finally realize their ambitious plans and become a leader among research institutions.
