Morehouse College hires Derrick Brooms of the University of Tennessee to be the Executive Director of its Black Men's Research Institute.
Morehouse College is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Derrick Brooms as the new executive director of the Black Men’s Research Institute (BMRI). Beginning August 2023, Dr. Brooms will bring over two decades of higher education experience to the college. His education research has focused on Black men and boys’ pathways to college, their engagement on campus, identity development, and the media’s representation of them.

Dr. Brooms joins Morehouse from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, where he is a professor of Africana studies and sociology, as well as the associate department head of Africana studies. With his research, teaching, and community/collaborative work, he has dedicated himself to educational equity, inclusion, and racial justice.

Dr. Brooms has expressed his enthusiasm towards the role. “Morehouse College is in a unique position to generate new scholarship centered on Black men and their communities through the BMRI. I am honored to accept this role and explore the multifaceted dimensions of Black male identity, challenges, and triumphs.”

Dr. Kendrick Brown, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Morehouse College, is equally excited about the appointment. “Dr. Brooms’ commitment to the advancement of Black men is in alignment with the college’s mission. His leadership will strengthen our efforts to serve these communities and achieve a more equitable society.”

The BMRI has been funded by a four-year grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The institute’s aim is to research, educate, and engage with Black men and their allies on the social, economic, and cultural issues that affect them in the U.S. and abroad. It is also equipped to provide them with the knowledge and tools to confront a society that marginalizes their contribution and their humanity.

This news was first reported on blackprwire.com. Morehouse College looks forward to Dr. Brooms taking up his new role and to the BMRI’s impact in the years to come.
