In an exclusive interview with PTI, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed criticism about the lack of job creation in the Indian economy. He confidently stated that his government has a track record of creating more employment opportunities for the youth compared to previous governments. This has been made possible through the government's comprehensive and multi-sectoral approach, with a focus on bringing the best opportunities to India's doorstep.
Modi highlighted the various initiatives and policies that have contributed to job creation, such as the significant recruitment in the government sector, the improvement in India's Ease of Business rankings, and the Production-Linked Incentive scheme for various sectors. He proudly mentioned that India has now become a leading exporter of mobile phones and the third-largest startup hub in the world, with a significant number of startups emerging from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the government's efforts towards expanding the economy and venturing into new and emerging sectors like space, semiconductor manufacturing, and EVs. He pointed out that this has led to the exponential growth of industries like defence production, tech startups, and cybersecurity, creating millions of direct and indirect jobs.
Modi also highlighted the government's focus on building next-generation infrastructure, with a significant increase in capital expenditure in this year's budget. He stated that the unprecedented speed and scale at which roads, airports, railways, and ports are being built have a direct impact on job creation. He backed up his claims with data, stating that the unemployment rate has halved, and the EPFO Payroll data has shown a significant increase in enrolment.
The Prime Minister also cited a recent report that stated 51.4 crore person-years of employment were generated between 2014 and 2024 due to the government's governance-led interventions and credit-led initiatives. He believes that the youth of India will consider these factors when they vote, making the BJP the natural choice for India's Yuva Shakti.
Despite the Indian economy growing at the fastest pace among its peers, some economists and opposition leaders claim that it has not generated enough jobs for its large and expanding young population. However, Modi remains confident in his government's efforts and the opportunities that have been created in the last 10 years. He believes that the youth of India will recognize and appreciate these efforts, making the BJP the preferred choice for them.
