Missy Elliott made history on Nov. 3 when she became the first female rapper ever to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The celebration took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, and included fellow Black artists such as Chaka Khan and DJ Kool Herc, in the midst of Hip Hop's 50th anniversary.
The evening was made even more special by a video highlighting Elliott's artistry and influence in the game and by remarks from Queen Latifah recognizing her groundbreaking impact on music.
“Nothing sounded the same after Missy came onto the scene,” Latifah said. “She is avant-garde without even trying.”
Elliott then took the stage to express her gratitude, and to thank her peers for the recognition.
“I’m still pinching myself to even be in a room with some of the inductees,” she said. “I see Flavor Flav, who is a legend. I love you, always been supportive. Elton John, legendary. Sheryl Crow, Chaka Khan, Willie Nelson. All of these people have impacted people around the world through their music.”
The evening concluded with a medley of some of Elliott's greatest hits, including “Work It” and “Lose Control.” The Virginia native also touched on the significance of the event, not just for herself but for Hip Hop overall.
“This is the 50th anniversary of hip hop,” she said. “And so this is deeper than me just being up here. I was telling Robin, you just feel like it’s so far to reach when you in the hip-hop world, and to be standing here, it means so much to me. I thank you all—the committee from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I just wanna say I love y’all and just try to spread love ’cause we so needed in this world.”
The induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a major milestone for Elliott, who has also recently received a Global Impact Award at the 2023 Grammy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2022. She even donated $50K to help families facing eviction in Virginia.
Missy Elliott's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a major achievement, not just for her, but for the entire Hip Hop community. Her legacy is now forever cemented in music history.
