It is with deep sorrow that we report the passing of former NFL wide receiver Mike Williams. Williams was injured in a construction accident two weeks ago and fell into a coma shortly after. On Tuesday, the 36-year-old was taken off life support and passed away.
His agent, Hadley Engelhard, expressed his sadness saying, “He will be missed. He fought hard his whole life. Prayers to his family.” The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his former team, also posted a message of condolence on their social media page saying, “We are saddened to hear of the untimely death of Mike Williams, which has left our organization, his former teammates, and fans with heavy hearts. We send our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones as they mourn this tragedy.”
WIVB reported that Williams’ mother, Mary Rosenthal, said her son needed a “Hail Mary” after he was taken off the ventilator on Friday. Rosenthal shared that her son had already signed documents in the event of this tragedy.
The Tampa Bay Times reported that the accident happened on September 1st and Williams suffered severe head and spinal cord injuries, as well as paralysis in his arm and lower body.
Williams’ career began in his high school days, where he played football for Riverside Institute of Technology. After graduating, he attended Syracuse University, where he made impressive numbers, finishing ninth in career receptions, eighth in receiving yards, and tied for second in receiving touchdowns.
In 2010, he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played four seasons before being traded to his hometown team, the Buffalo Bills. He played in six games that season, catching 22 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns.
