MBMC seeks to implement a cluster redevelopment scheme to improve industrial zones.
The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) is considering the implementation of a cluster scheme for industrial units in the twin-city. If the proposal is given the green signal by the government, the MBMC would be the first civic body in the state to roll out a cluster policy for industrial zones. This was revealed by Municipal Commissioner Dilip Dhole at a function graced by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in Kashimira, on Sunday.

The cluster policy entails combined redevelopment of more than one plot or building, and provides various exemptions including additional Floor Space Index (FSI) to developers and housing societies. This would pave the way for the redevelopment of old and dilapidated buildings.

The MBMC is aware of the plight of the large industrial units, which are deprived of facilities due to land-related issues. As such, Dhole has suggested simplifying the permission process for repairs, along with providing extra FSI for expansions. The president of Mira Bhayandar Small Scale Industries Association, Omar Kapoor, is also in favour of the cluster concept, provided its modalities are explained and consent is taken from the stakeholders.

In the twin-city, there are approximately 12,000 small and medium scale industrial units, with more than 2,000 of them engaged in manufacturing steel utensils and components. These industries can contribute to the country's foreign exchange earnings and provide a boost to the economy. To take things further, the country's first all-steel railway foot over bridge has been installed at the Bhayandar railway station.

As such, the MBMC has now set the ball rolling for seven cluster projects for the industrial zones in the twin-city. This could be the first step towards making the city a hub for industrial excellence.
