Marathi Community Celebrates Tradition Through Mud-Field Sports

Madikeri, Oct. 8: Amidst the scenic beauty of lush green hills, members of the Marathi community enthusiastically participated in the second annual mud-field sports event held at the paddy field of Marati Somappa in 2nd Monnangeri.

Mud-field sports events are a common sight in Kodagu district during the monsoon season. Accordingly, under the joint auspices of the District Maratha/Marathi Samaj Seva Sangha and its Women's Wing, the Ambabhavani Youth Sports and Entertainment Association, and various sub-committees, this second annual event took place against a backdrop of overcast skies.

Sports enthusiasts showcased their talents in the muddy arena. The players' slips and tumbles provided an entertaining spectacle for the audience. A light drizzle, accompanied by a pleasant chill, further boosted the spirits of the participants. Fourteen exciting events were held in a knee-deep muddy field, featuring categories such as running races, brisk walking, a 'pole-circling' race, pot-breaking, a pairs race, tug-of-war (teams of seven), areca-sheath dragging in the mud, backward running, a 'sack-of-salt' race (carrying a person on one's back), and a mud-filling contest using cupped hands.

Inauguration: M.T. Devappa Kattemadu, the Madikeri Taluk Organizing Secretary of the District Maratha/Marathi Samaj Seva Sangha, inaugurated the sports meet.
