A heinous incident of a wife facing dowry demands has been reported in Gauripur Amwa Tola village of Bihar’s West Champaran district. The woman's mother, Aasma Khatoon, approached the district police to register an FIR and expose the brutish act. On October 10, Aasma’s daughter, Sitara Khatoon, was killed in front of her by her husband, Nuren Mian, and his family members.
The man, hailing from Bhaluahiya village under Purusottampur police station, had been demanding a bike despite having already received an adequate dowry at the time of marriage. Aasma Khatoon, in distress, said, “I was pleading with them to show mercy to my daughter but they did not and pressed her neck until she died. The accused after committing the crime, buried the dead body and fled from the spot.”
The district police, on the direction of a duty magistrate, recovered the body from the grave and sent it for post-mortem examination. In the police FIR, Nuren Mian, his mother Mehrunnisa, and four other family members have been accused and are on the run. Shikarpur police station SHO Ramasray Yadav said, “We are making efforts to nab them.”
This incident is yet another example of the plight of women in parts of India where many are victims of domestic abuse and inhuman treatment. It is essential that the accused be brought to justice to ensure that such horrendous acts do not go unpunished.
