A young man, aged 20, has been charged with a serious crime after a police officer was stabbed in the chest in Western Sydney. It was around 12:30 am when the police received a call about a fight between five men on Hill End Road in Doonside. As the police arrived at the scene, four of the men drove away in a hatchback while the fifth man, who has now been identified as the 20-year-old charged with the crime, ran away on foot.
Initially, the police officers who had responded to the call found the man who had fled on foot and arrested him. However, during the arrest, the 20-year-old allegedly stabbed a 34-year-old officer. Assistant Commissioner Gavin Wood of the NSW Police said, "Our allegation is that the offender turned around and stabbed the officer twice." The 34-year-old officer was stabbed in his left rib and right side of his back with a 12-inch knife. Despite being injured, both the officer and his partner managed to arrest the suspect before heading to Westmead Hospital for treatment.
Commissioner Wood also mentioned that he had visited the injured officer, who was reported to be in good spirits and in a stable condition as he received treatment for his injuries. "The conduct is abhorrent. There's no sugar-coating it, it's abhorrent," Commissioner Wood said. "Sometimes you think you've seen it all, but for a young officer just doing his job at one in the morning to end up in the hospital with two major stab wounds, it's just unimaginable."
According to Commissioner Wood, the 20-year-old had a knife and a machete on him when he was arrested and has been charged with wounding a police officer, causing grievous bodily harm, using a weapon to avoid arrest, and assaulting a police officer. He was taken to Blacktown Police Station and has been refused bail. He is expected to appear in Blacktown Local Court today.
Meanwhile, the police had also pursued the hatchback that had driven away from the scene of the fight. The pursuit came to an end when the hatchback crashed into a power pole on Power Street, and four men fled the car. Two of the men were arrested, while the police are still searching for the other two. The two arrested men, aged 18 and 21, are currently in custody at Blacktown Police Station. During the arrest, the police found a number of knives and machetes in their possession.
