Today marks the third anniversary of Chadwick Boseman's untimely passing. Lupita Nyong'o, his co-star from Black Panther, took to Instagram to share her memories and to celebrate his life.
In her post, Nyong'o wrote, "Three years ago today, I experienced a singular pain at the news of Chadwick Boseman's death. The confusion was so profound that it took months to trust the feeling of joy again."
The pair created a genuine bond while working on Black Panther as childhood friends and lovers, Nakia and T'Challa. Nyong'o went on to say, "Death is hard to understand, maybe even harder to accept. But the love generated from the life he lived will fuel every anniversary marking his absence. Chadwick may no longer be in our photos, but he will always be in our hearts."
According to Variety, Nyong'o and Boseman's other Black Panther castmates returned to film the highly-anticipated sequel with heavy hearts. She leaned on director Ryan Coogler to help her heal. Nyong'o said, "But at the same time we have a leader in [writer-director] Ryan [Coogler], who feels very much like we do, who feels the loss in a very, very real way as well. And his idea, the way in which he has reshaped the second movie is so respectful of the loss we’ve all experienced as a cast and as a world. So it feels spiritually and emotionally correct to do this."
As a tribute to Boseman, the Black Panther suit he wore in the movie will be displayed at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Nyong'o concluded, "I look forward to getting back together and honoring what he started with us and holding his light through it. Because he left us a lot of light that we’re still going to be bathing in. I know that for sure."
