It was a sad night for Strictly Come Dancing 2023 fans as the first celebrity was eliminated from the show. Les Dennis and his professional dance partner Nancy Xu were voted off on Saturday night after their Samba performance to Hues Corporation’s Rock The Boat.
Although they had the lowest total number of points from the judges, Les was praised for putting his absolute all into his performances and revelling in the spirit of Strictly at 69 years old. This was clear when he and Nancy faced off against radio presenter Nikita Kanda and her partner Gorka Márquez in the dreaded dance-off.
The judges took a vote and Craig Revel Horwood announced that he would like to save Nikita and Gorka, followed by Motsi Mabuse, who agreed with him. Anton then confirmed Les and Nancy’s fate as he said that Nikita and Gorka had done the best job. Even head judge Shirley Ballas revealed that she would have also voted to save the other couple.
Les and Nancy graciously accepted the judges’ decision. Les said that he had the ‘best time’ on Strictly and thanked Nancy for being a ‘great teacher’. Nancy, in turn, thanked the judges and all her fellow friends for their support.
The remaining 14 couples will be taking on Movie Week next week, while Les and Nancy will join Fleur East and Janette Manrara to speak about their exit on Strictly: It Takes Two on Monday evening. Fans can tune in to BBC One and BBC iPlayer to catch the show on Saturday at 6.20pm.
