Learn how to use AI to explore creative writing, discover 7 steps to become a successful writer in a world of ChatGPT.
In June 2023, the ChatGPT website had 1.6 billion users, with 20% using it to create content - that's 320 million writers using AI in just one month! But as this new technology rises, it's caused some to worry. Will AI take our jobs? Will it steal our creativity?

Writers and actors in Hollywood are standing together in response to these questions, and going on strike. It's been decades since the last one, when Marilyn Monroe and Ronald Reagan were starlets.

The media industry is a capitalist venture, looking to do more with less and make more money. AI has the potential to replace writers and actors for simple tasks, but the future promises something even more dystopian for those who don't embrace it. AI can do the idea, the script, production, and marketing - and many worry that it will take away our creativity and purpose.

But some see AI as a tool, not a replacement. It can allow us to write more in a day and be more productive. We can use it to help us without handing over control - so how do we do that?

We need to use ChatGPT as a tool and not a crutch. We can't let it become a creative killer, and we need to make sure our writing sounds human, despite the easy route of handing the job over to the machine. We need to use it to enhance our creativity, not replace it.

To achieve this, I've come up with a 7 step process. It's not necessarily sequential, and it's more slanted towards writing information and education articles - but it can help us be productive and creative.

The first step is to brainstorm and concept develop. ChatGPT can challenge our fixed ideas by throwing new ideas into the mix. We can use the right “Prompt Engineering” to get an outline for our first draft without needing to go anywhere else. And we can use it to optimize for SEO - 8.5 billion searches are made on Google every day, so if you can rank on page one, that's thousands of website views for free every month.

Using ChatGPT as a tool and not a crutch is our goal. We need to make sure we can use it to help us write and enhance our creativity without giving up control.

The challenge is to combine our human creativity with the help of AI, without letting it take over. We need to continue to evolve without losing our soul and purpose along the way.
In June 2023, the ChatGPT website had an astonishing 1.6 billion users with 320 million using AI to create content. This rapid rise of AI technology has caused a stir amongst many creatives, particularly in Hollywood, where writers and actors are striking in fear of job losses.
The reasons for this are twofold; the first being that streaming platforms are changing business models and the second being the rise of generative AI platforms like ChatGPT. With the potential for AI to do it all - from the idea, to the script, through to production and marketing - it is understandable why the creative human writers are feeling threatened.

The challenge for writers is to use ChatGPT as a tool, not a crutch. It can help with productivity, allowing more to be written in a day, but it also has to be used creatively in order to keep the output looking and sounding human.

To help writers achieve this, I have developed a 7 step process to combine human writing creativity with the assistance of ChatGPT. The first step is brainstorming and concept development, which can be done using the right “Prompt Engineering”. This can provide an outline for the first draft, which can be further enhanced by asking ChatGPT to write 10 headline options.

The second step is creating an outline optimized for SEO. With 8.5 billion searches on Google every day, ranking on page one can bring in thousands of website views for free each month.

The remaining five steps are focused on how to make the writing sound human but still let the robot do the heavy information and research lifting. Through this process, the hope is that writers can make their writing creative and human without relying solely on the AI output.

At the end of the day, humans are lazy and naturally we want to get paid the most while doing the least. However, creativity provides purpose and meaning and most of us want to enjoy work and be happy. Using ChatGPT as a tool and not a crutch should help us to reach the pinnacle of Maslow’s Pyramid - the aspiration to achieve self-actualization and fully unleash our creative potential as individuals.
