**Landslide Prevention Measures Underway on the Chettalli–Madikeri Road**

Chettalli, June 23: In view of the landslides that occur in various parts of the Chettalli-Madikeri main road every year during the rainy season, landslide prevention work has been started under the State Disaster Relief Fund.

Earlier, a total of Rs. 6.79 crore was sanctioned for landslide prevention and disaster relief work in 104 places in Kodagu district on the basis of survey. Accordingly, the work is being carried out in various dangerous areas of the Chettalli-Madikeri main road, and the work has been entrusted to three contractors.

Giving information about this, Kushalnagar Taluk Engineer Arabas said that Rs. 131 lakh has been released for the work of about 180 meters in length and the work has started from last week. He said that the identified roadside ditches are being dug and a retaining wall and drainage works are being carried out.

But locals have expressed concern about the timing of the work. They are of the opinion that the work is being undertaken at the beginning of the rainy season, which is likely to cause traffic problems.

Although about 25 drains have been constructed on the Chettalli-Kulakkadu road in the past, only three drains are flowing smoothly, while the rest are clogged with mud and garbage, locals said. There is no proper system for rainwater to flow in the areas where the work is being done, so the water flows on the road. The public has expressed concern that many concrete drains on the Chettalli-Kulakkadu road have already been blocked, and rainwater will flow onto the main road, damaging the road and increasing the possibility of flooding the next slope. Locals have demanded that the authorities concerned immediately take necessary steps to clean the drains and ensure smooth flow of rainwater.
