Farmers accused of not getting the right price for coffee

Madikeri, Aug. 26: Even though the price of coffee has increased in the national market, the farmers of Kodagu are not getting the right price. It is inevitable to cancel the licenses of coffee buyers who do not pay the right price as per the national price at the district level, said Mayamudi Gram Panchayat President Appatthira S. Tatu Monnappa.

Issuing a press release, he said that the farmers are being treated unfairly by the exporters and middlemen who buy coffee. He said that the respective Gram Panchayats need to think about canceling the licenses of those who do not fix the price according to the national price and the interests of the growers need to be protected.

Despite many difficulties, small and medium growers who rely on coffee for their livelihood were looking forward to seeing a recovery in coffee prices. But even though the price has increased in the national market, the growers are disappointed and worried because the price of coffee is not fixed properly here. He said that a complaint will be filed with the District Collector with the cooperation of all the growers in the district, demanding strict action against those who do injustice to the growers.

Not only the growers, but also the families of the wage laborers are relying on coffee, which is the lifeblood of Kodagu. If the growers and the workers want justice, the appropriate price for coffee should be given according to the national price, has demanded.
