Kirk Charles invites 1 million individuals to adopt a plant-based diet by cycling 1,000 miles.
Kirk Charles has a mission to make people aware of the health disparities that are affecting Black Americans. And he's doing it in a unique and inspiring way - by biking 1,000 miles. He wants to inspire others to take control of their health, just like he did years ago when he made the decision to lead a healthier lifestyle.

The first part of Charles' journey took him from Central Park in NYC to Montclair, NJ. From there, he is headed to Philadelphia and will end his ride in Chicago on June 5th. When asked about his motivation for this incredible feat, Charles, who is 61 years old, explained to BLACK ENTERPRISE that he wants to give people hope and inspiration. He knows that once people hit 50, health issues can start to arise, such as being overweight, heart problems, diabetes, and cancer. But he wants to show that it's possible to overcome these challenges. Charles, who has been a plant-based vegan for 35 years, doesn't consume any meat, chicken, eggs, or dairy products.

Despite being a personal trainer and following a plant-based diet for so long, Charles was still faced with a health scare when he was diagnosed with hypertension in 2017. This only motivated him further to take action and spread the message of healthy living. He's been preaching about this lifestyle for 35 years, but now he wants to lead by example and show others that it's possible to turn their lives around.

"I don't want to just talk about it anymore," Charles shared. "I want to do something about it and be a living example for others to follow." He believes that actions speak louder than words and wants to bring attention to himself so that he can address the importance of diet and exercise in preventing the need for medication. Following a plant-based diet not only helps with weight loss, but it also increases energy levels and overall well-being.

Charles added, "Ultimately, you'll have more fun and be happier if you prioritize your health."

A recent study conducted with 592 African American participants showed that those who adopted a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle experienced a 44% decrease in the risk of hypertension. Charles' journey may involve biking anywhere from 30 to 95 miles in a day, but his enthusiasm and determination keep him going. He's also no stranger to exercise and fitness, which fuels his passion for promoting a clean and healthy lifestyle.

"I want to reach one million people and encourage them to consider a plant-based diet. You don't have to fully commit to being vegan or vegetarian - it's about incorporating more plants into your meals. The more plants you eat, the better off you'll be," Charles explained.

As a member of the Major Taylor cycling club, Charles is grateful for the support of his community. He's also encouraging others from New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, and Chicago to join him on his journey as he passes through their cities. Charles' message is clear - it's never too late to take control of your health and make positive changes that can lead to a happier and healthier life.
