King Charles wears a new tartan for his first Highland Gathering as monarch.
His Majesty King Charles III arrived at the Braemar Royal Highland Gathering, a short distance from his summer residence at Balmoral in Aberdeenshire, wearing a new tartan named after him. The King Charles III tartan was designed by the Scottish Tartans Authority and features shades of green, blue and red to mark his coronation.

The King was accompanied by the Queen, wearing an outfit by Mr Roy, as well as his sister the Princess Royal and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence. Charles was seen in good spirits throughout the event, often laughing and clapping while watching the games.

John McLeish, chair of the Scottish Tartans Authority, remarked that tartan is an iconic fabric that has a distinct style and evokes strong feelings of belonging. He added that the King is an ambassador for tartan, Highland Dress and the traditions of the Highlands, and that it was an honour for the Authority to be at Braemar to witness the King wearing the tartan for the first time.

The King and Queen were captured in a number of photographs, laughing together and enjoying the competition. The Princess Royal was also present and the King presented trophies to some of the winning competitors, who participated in sports such as the shot put and the tug-of-war.

This was the first time the King has appeared as monarch at the games, though he did often attend as the Prince of Wales. The royal family even used a photograph taken at the games last year for one of their Christmas cards. Traditionally, the monarch also becomes Chief of the Gathering, though an announcement regarding the King has yet to be made.
