It's no secret that I have a deep appreciation for the truly wicked characters on television. From the catty villains to the unhinged superbitches and sociopaths, I can't get enough. My undying love for these characters has even led me to campaign for the return of Mad Maya on Coronation Street and reminisce about Lorraine Chase's antics on Emmerdale.
Recently, I've been thoroughly enjoying the arrival of Beth Cordingly's Ruby Fox-Miligan on the small screen. She has killer one-liners, is completely self-absorbed, and has perfected the classic soap baddie smirk. However, as much as I love her, there's one person who will always hold the top spot in my heart - the legendary Kim Tate.
Played by the talented Claire King, Kim has always been a master of her craft. She's been spiteful, outrageous, and has never shied away from extreme revenge. So while I may enjoy watching Ruby stir up trouble, I could never root for her to take down the queen of camp soap bad girls.
You see, Kim's sole purpose on the show is to destroy Kim Tate. She's here to do one thing and one thing only, and that's to bring down the infamous Home Farm Hellion. But let's be real, who could ever truly topple Kim? Her reign of terror has been unmatched for years.
I've often warned others in preview articles that crossing Kim should come with a warning label. Taking her on used to be a death sentence, but in recent years she's become a bit of a pushover. Don't get me wrong, she's still loathsome and mostly conscience-free, but she's not quite the unstoppable force she used to be.
When it was first announced that Kim was making her grand return after nearly two decades, fans were over the moon. We had all but given up hope of seeing her again, especially after she flew off in a helicopter following a massive fraud scheme. Classic Kim.
She was on every soap fan's list of desired returns for years and when she finally graced our screens once again, it was nothing short of a national event. She came back with a vengeance, tearing through the village and reclaiming her throne at Home Farm. But even the mighty Kim Tate has her moments of vulnerability, showcasing a more human side in her friendships with characters like Seth Armstrong and her genuine love for Dave Glover.
For a while, the balance between her evil and human sides was just right. But then something changed. Kim became almost unrecognizable, letting others walk all over her without consequence. The Kim of old would have never let someone like Rose into her home, yet here she is, standing by while her ex-husband's new flame makes advances on him.
I find myself missing the old Kim Tate, the one who would have destroyed her son's wife without a second thought. The one who would have let a storm take her rival's life without batting an eye. But my wishes may soon come true as Kim finally learns the truth about Rose's scheming and decides to do something about it.
I've asked Claire about the possibility of revisiting Kim's evil side in past interviews, but this time she's teased it with more conviction. And I couldn't be more thrilled. It's what I've been waiting for - a chance for my all-time favorite character to rediscover her true self and unleash her full wrath. It's been a long time coming, but I have a feeling the evil Kim drought may finally be over.
So here's to hoping that Kim will once again reign supreme as the superbitch we all know and love. All hail Kim Tate!
