Kevin Spacey arrived at court on Friday morning to face the prosecution’s opening statements in his sexual assault trial. The Oscar-winning actor is denying twelve charges of sex offences, including sexual assault and indecent assault, against four men.
He was seen stepping out of a black taxi dressed in a grey suit and a yellow tie. Smiling at photographers, he made his way into the Southwark Crown Court in London, accompanied by his legal team.
The jury panel of fourteen, which consists of nine men and three women, was sworn in on Wednesday. Mr. Justice Mark Wall addressed the prospective jurors and told them that the defendant would be “gratified” to know that many of them have seen his films. He added that the case has received a lot of media attention, but jurors must avoid said coverage.
Mr. Patrick Gibbs KC, Spacey’s lawyer, said in a preliminary court hearing in June that his client “strenuously denies any and all criminality in this case”.
Spacey is best known for his roles in The Usual Suspects, American Beauty, Superman Returns, Horrible Bosses, and Pay It Forward. He has won two Oscars, one for best supporting actor and the other for best actor.
The trial is set to begin and the jury are being reminded to remain impartial. We will have to wait to see what the court decides.
