Kevin Clifton is hopeful that learning about his incredible family history on Who Do You Think You Are? could inspire his baby daughter Minnie. He recently found out he was going to be a dad to Minnie with his girlfriend Stacey Dooley, who he won Strictly Come Dancing with in 2018.
In the latest episode of the BBC genealogy series, Kevin was moved to learn about the inspirational women he’s descended from, including a legendary figure known to historians called Matooski.
Kevin explained that he initially thought the rumours of Matooski were untrue, but it turned out she was in fact his five-times great-grandmother. She was one of few First Nations women of Canada to be recorded in historical documents, and had been abandoned by her British husband.
Matooski and her daughter Grace, Kevin’s four-times great-grandmother, faced a brush with death during a dangerous boat journey. Despite what she had been through, Matooski went on to thrive in her life and even wrote a will which she signed with an ‘X’ because she couldn’t read or write.
When asked if he was looking forward to telling Minnie about her ancestors, Kevin said he was first of all thankful for Stacey, who he considers an amazing role model for their daughter. He also expressed his excitement to show Minnie that despite the men in her family not always acting that great, the women endured and showed tremendous toughness and resilience.
Kevin also shared that he felt a sense of connection and protection towards these women, even though his life experience was so different to theirs.
The Agency recently spoke to the performer about what it was like to uncover the truth behind mysteries that had been in his family for many years when he took part in the genealogy series. Kevin Clifton’s Who Do You Think You Are? episode airs tonight at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer - and he can’t wait for Minnie to learn about the amazing women in her ancestry.
