Kelsey Grammer recently revealed some exciting news for fans of the Frasier revival. Despite the second season only just beginning, the 69-year-old actor is already thinking about surprising viewers with the return of some controversial characters.
Of course, Frasier Crane's journey began on Cheers before he got his own spin-off show with David Hyde Pierce, John Mahoney, Jane Leeves, and Peri Gilpin. While the Paramount+ revival introduced some new faces last year, Bebe Neuwirth and Peri reprised their roles, and we can also expect to see Harriet Sansom Harris, Edward Hibbert, and Dan Butler in upcoming episodes.
During an interview with The Agency to promote the current season, Kelsey hinted at who else he would like to see make a comeback. "Right now, we just have Roz and my agent, Bebe Glazer, played by Harriet Harris, making an appearance," he shared. "We've got Bulldog and Gil Chesterton, they're coming back in November. I think everyone already knows that. But I'm cooking up a couple of surprises that I think the writers will be on board with. We'd love to get the Moon family back!"
Kelsey specifically mentioned Daphne Moon's father, Brian Cox, and how he would love to have him return to teach his grandson how to drink. "Something like that, in that loose area," he added. As fans may recall, the Moon family was composed of some wild characters, including Millicent Martin as Daphne's mother, Gertrude Moon, and Anthony LaPaglia as her brother, Simon. Brian made a brief appearance as her drunken father, and Robbie Coltrane and Richard E Grant played her brothers in the finale.
Unfortunately, the Moon family didn't seem to resonate with viewers, with many criticizing their "frustrating," "out of place," and "one-dimensional" portrayals on Reddit. But could we see Gertrude Moon return in the future? Time will tell.
But that's not the only member of the Frasier gang that could potentially make a comeback. Kelsey also revealed that he has a plot in mind for Kirby Gardner, played by Brian Klugman, who was the son of Jean Smart's character, Lana Gardner. "He and I have stayed great friends since we shared the screen together years ago," Kelsey shared. "There's a great character, Jean Smart's kid Kirby – the red-haired, curly-haired kid. People really remember him. It would be really fun to see him make an appearance and see that he's really succeeded somehow. Something's really taken off, and it's all connected to his past and his old girlfriend and a wine cellar."
Fans have been calling for the return of Sir David Jason, hoping to see a reunion with his former Only Fools and Horses co-star, Nicholas Lyndhurst. When asked about the possibility, Kelsey didn't completely rule it out. "Who knows? I mean, he could just walk by and say 'Dipstick', couldn't he?" Kelsey joked. "It might be really fun to have Alan maybe watching the old show or something. There's any number of ways to make that connection, because of course, it is a nostalgic show, and Nick has such a huge presence in the UK – with good reason! He's one of the best actors who ever lived. There's no question about his abilities, and he's beloved. We'll mine that as much as we possibly can."
Kelsey also praised Nicholas's acting and teased that he may take the reins of the A story in a future episode. "I can't wait until maybe next season where Frasier doesn't even have to do anything at all, we'll just let Nick have the show," Kelsey shared. "We're really looking forward to what that one might be. We've set it up well enough to have him take the reins of the A story in a show pretty soon. We're working up to that now."
Fans can catch the second season of Frasier on Paramount+ now, with new episodes dropping on Thursdays. And who knows, maybe we'll see some familiar faces make a return.
