New Delhi: Following the recent claims made by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regarding Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's weight loss in prison, Tihar jail sources have clarified that he has only lost 2 kg and is being closely monitored by a medical board from AIIMS.
The jail administration has even written to the Delhi government's Home Department to address the allegations made by AAP ministers and leaders, stating that the narrative being spread is misleading and confusing for the public.
Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh has stated that the Tihar authorities have finally acknowledged Kejriwal's weight loss. The party had previously accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of intentionally trying to harm Kejriwal's health by keeping him in jail and neglecting his medical needs as a diabetic.
Minister Atishi from the Delhi cabinet had expressed her concern over Kejriwal's sudden weight loss of 8.5 kg since his arrest and claimed that his sugar levels had dropped below 50 mg/dL multiple times while in prison.
According to the health report shared by Tihar sources, Kejriwal weighed 65 kg when he first entered the prison on April 1 and maintained a weight of 66 kg from April 8 to 29. However, when he returned to prison on June 2 after a 21-day bail, his weight had dropped to 63.5 kg.
"On July 14, his weight was recorded at 61.5 kg, which shows a loss of only 2 kg," an official source stated.
It has been confirmed that Kejriwal is being provided with home-cooked meals, but he has been consistently returning portions of it since June 3. The medical board from AIIMS has been keeping a close eye on the chief minister's health, and his wife Sunita Kejriwal is in regular contact with them.
The jail administration has also written to the Delhi government's Home Department, dismissing the AAP's allegations and stating that Kejriwal's health is being taken care of adequately. The letter also mentioned that the constant vilification by certain groups in the media is based on false information and malicious intentions to intimidate the prison administration.
In response to these developments, AAP MP Sanjay Singh released a statement, claiming that the Tihar authorities have finally accepted that Kejriwal's sugar levels have dropped multiple times and that he has lost weight. He also warned that if the chief minister's sugar levels drop while he is asleep, he could go into a coma or suffer a stroke.
Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in a money laundering case related to the Delhi government's now-defunct excise policy for 2021-22. He was then arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on June 26 in a corruption case linked to the same alleged scam while being held in Tihar jail.
Although the Supreme Court granted him interim bail on Friday in the money laundering case, he continues to remain in jail for the CBI case.
