Kareem Holmes and his family have made a positive impact on New York City's tourism industry with the establishment of Big City Tourism, the only Black-owned nautical business in the city. From his experience growing up in the Lower East Side’s Jacob Riss Houses, Holmes was inspired to create a business that would provide guests with a unique opportunity to engage in the beauty of the city, as well as its people. After previously being incarcerated and investing in a taxi cab company, Holmes was able to use the startup money to create Big City Tourism.
The company's flagship vessel, the Franklin D. Roosevelt, takes guests on a tour of the Hudson and East River and offers the Freedom Liberty Tour, which takes visitors under the Brooklyn Bridge, to Lady Liberty, and Governor’s Island. Armand Pohan, NY Waterway’s chair, praised the company, noting how impressed they were with Big City Tourism's vision and commitment to bringing the harbor's sights and sounds to the world.
Big City Tourism has made an incredible impact on the local community and continues to create unique opportunities for visitors to experience the beauty of New York City. To book a tour, simply visit bigcitytourism.com or email
