On February 1st, there was quite a stir on social media when Kanye West went on a rant on his X account. His posts were quite concerning and included snippets of a conversation with Elon Musk, as well as a now-deleted confession about wanting to have relations with Kamala Harris before she lost to Trump. He later apologized to Harris' children for this inappropriate statement.
Newsweek reported that West's outburst also included some unexpected praise for Donald Trump, someone who he has had a tumultuous relationship with in the past. He even claimed that he is once again a billionaire, despite Forbes' estimation of his net worth stating otherwise.
Although West did apologize to Harris' children, he did not directly apologize to her. This may be due to the fact that Harris does not have biological children, but she does have two step-children from her husband's previous relationship. West did mention his post about Harris in another one of his posts, where he also pledged his allegiance to Trump.
"The Democrats made me take the loser post down. Just kidding. They don't control Black people anymore. Trump for life," West wrote.
In 2022, there was controversy surrounding West when he brought white supremacist Nick Fuentes to dine with Trump at Mar-a-Lago. He then made an appearance on conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' Infowars show, where he attempted to spread antisemitism. Surprisingly, he faced pushback from Jones.
Later, during a separate appearance on The Alex Jones Show, West openly praised Hitler and the Nazi party. He even went as far as saying he "loves" Nazis and "likes" Hitler, and blamed the Jewish media for painting them in a negative light.
Despite all of these concerning instances, once Elon Musk bought Twitter and renamed it X, West was welcomed back onto the platform alongside other hate groups and Nazis that the previous owners would have banned without hesitation.
West's comments about Harris are not new, as Jenn M. Jackson pointed out in a 2018 column for Teen Vogue. Jackson traced the roots of West's obsession with whiteness, patriarchy, and power.
As Jackson wrote, "West's support of Trump, a president whose policies actively harm marginalized groups and specifically Black Americans, is a reflection of his beliefs. Kanye's views on race, gender, and politics reveal a deeper commitment to misogynoir and anti-Blackness, common behaviors exhibited by Black men when it grants them access to power."
Jackson continued, "When Black men perpetuate patriarchy and sexism, as Kanye does by aligning himself with Trump, they are reinforcing the very systems that oppress all Black people. This echoes the harmful stereotype of the "Uncle Tom" character, whose main goal is seeking approval from white people."
In other news, West recently lost a wrongful termination lawsuit by default judgment.
