Despite being unbeaten in 15 professional fights prior to the bout, Joyce was stopped in the sixth round on the advice of the doctor due to a nasty injury to his right eye. At the time of the stoppage, two of the judges had awarded the round to Zhang.

The Chinese fighter impressed with a series of heavy shots in the early rounds, and although Joyce showed his best form in the fifth round, his lack of movement allowed Zhang to continue to land and it soon became clear that the fight would not go the distance.
