Jay-Z surprises a Black, family-owned Chicago Soul Food restaurant with a visit to show his support.
Recently, Beyoncé stopped in Chicago on her "Renaissance World Tour," and there was a surprising buzz in the Bronzeville neighborhood. Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Beyoncé's husband, had made an unexpected visit to a local Black-owned restaurant called Bronzeville Soul.

Mario Coleman and Angie Price, the owners of Bronzeville Soul, were taken aback by the visit. Price said that she was already hoping for the couple's visit prior to their arrival. She said, “Beyoncé concert is in town this weekend. Wouldn’t it be great if they came to the restaurant, and lo and behold, it happened.”

Coleman said that he was shocked to see it was actually Jay-Z. He said, “I couldn’t believe it was him. Actually, when I first saw him, I didn’t think it was him. I thought it was someone else acting like Jay-Z.”

It was even more surprising to the owners when Jay-Z specifically asked for short ribs and pound cake. Coleman said, “It kind of messed me up that he even knew to ask for it. So by him asking for it, it was just like, wow, Jay-Z knows about Bronzeville Soul.”

On the other hand, Jay-Z said that he heard about the spot through word of mouth and wanted to support Black businesses. Coleman said, “His actual words to me was once he looked us up and saw it was a Black business, he did tell me he wanted to support Black businesses, and he said, that’s why I’m here. He said they said the food is good.”

Needless to say, it was a great day for the restaurant owners as word spread that Jay-Z was at Bronzeville Soul. It was a moment of affirmation for Price, since she had spoken the visit into existence. She said, “So much for speaking things into existence!”
