Chelsea are anticipated to procure a new striker this summer

Chelsea have been informed that a potentially prolific scorer at Stamford Bridge is right in their backyard as they prepare to acquire a fresh goalscorer this summer.

No Chelsea player has scored at least ten goals this season, with Kai Havertz being the highest scorer from 36 games with nine goals.

The Blues believed they had solved their scoring issues in the summer of 2021 when they re-signed Romelu Lukaku in a club record deal worth £97.5m.

Yet the Belgium international had a hard time last season before he was loaned out to Inter Milan for the 2022-23 term.

Lukaku is due to return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, though Chelsea are already considering selling the 29-year-old and replacing him with a new striker.

Chelsea are one of the clubs linked with Napoli ace Victor Osimhen but Jason Cundy believes the Blues should look closer to home and acquire a striker from a Premier League opponent.

Cundy, who spent four years at Chelsea during his playing days, believes Brentford talisman Ivan Toney has the potential to be successful at Stamford Bridge.

Toney is having another remarkable season with Brentford, netting 16 goals in 25 Premier League performances and obtaining a call-up to England’s squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine.

Toney’s selection came as somewhat of a surprise as he is facing a potential ban from the game having admitted breaking FA betting regulations.

Speaking on Chelsea’s YouTube channel, Cundy stated: ‘Do we need a centre-forward? Yes, we do.

Ivan Toney is experiencing another remarkable season at Brentford

‘Ivan Toney has his issues off the field with what is occurring with the betting situation he has been charged with. Let’s wait and see with all that.

‘But to me, he is a Chelsea centre-forward. The way he is, the way he looks, the way he plays. He is a Chelsea player.

‘We need a platform. We need a solid, hard, intelligent, clever footballer up front. He ticks a lot of boxes. Plus, he knows the Premier League.’
