Jamie Theakston, the popular host of Heart Breakfast, recently shared an update on his health after undergoing treatment for cancer. The 53-year-old presenter revealed that he has to visit a surgeon for monthly check-ups and opened up about his recovery journey.
Last September, Jamie announced that he had been diagnosed with stage 1 Laryngeal cancer after a lesion was removed from his vocal chords. As a result, he took a temporary break from his hosting duties on the show, which he co-hosts with Amanda Holden on weekday mornings, to undergo surgery.
Thankfully, Jamie announced earlier this year that he is now cancer-free and even stopped by the studio to share the good news with Amanda and temporary co-host JK. However, despite a low risk of the disease returning, Jamie shared that he has to see his surgeon on a monthly basis for the time being.
In a recent interview with The Times, Jamie shared that as time passes, the intervals between his appointments will increase to three and then six months. He also revealed that he initially had the option of radiotherapy but opted for surgery instead. However, he had to undergo a second operation and have more tissue removed, which set back his recovery.
"I was frustrated because I just wanted to get back to work," Jamie shared. "I remember reading an interview Amanda had given saying, 'We hope to have him back by Christmas.' I had thought, way before Christmas! So the second operation put us back a bit."
Unfortunately, during the healing process, scar tissue formed and was touching his other vocal cord, requiring a third surgery. Jamie shared that at this point, there was a real chance he might lose his voice altogether. But luckily, the third surgery was successful, and Jamie was confident that it was over.
On January 20, Jamie returned to his hosting duties, four months after his cancer diagnosis. He made the exciting announcement during a visit to the studio the week before, where he also reunited with his longtime friend Davina McCall. Jamie credits Davina for realizing something was wrong when she hugged him and he felt pain in his throat.
"I was so worried about you," Davina tearfully shared. "Can I be honest, when I hugged you that day here, and you went, 'Ow, ow, ow!' I looked at you and thought oh my goodness, I've really hurt you. But I carried that for a very long time. You getting better means so much to me."
Jamie also expressed his gratitude for Davina's hug, as it led him to seek medical advice and ultimately receive his cancer diagnosis. He returned to the show with a renewed appreciation for his health and shared the news that he is now cancer-free.
Now, Jamie is back on the airwaves, hosting Heart Breakfast with Amanda Holden every weekday from 6:30 am.
