Jamie Redknapp has been left astonished at the Moises Caicedo transfer saga. Liverpool had agreed terms for a British record £111m deal, with Jurgen Klopp even addressing the move in his pre-Chelsea press conference.
However, it was reported that Caicedo had told Liverpool he favoured a move to Stamford Bridge.
Redknapp, the former England midfielder, could not believe that Caicedo had turned down a move to Anfield. He said on the Sky Sports Football podcast:
"It’s been astonishing what has happened these past few days. I thought I’d seen it all with football transfers. I'm amazed that a player could turn down a club like Liverpool, with all their history and Jurgen Klopp - the man who has been there for so long. I thought it would have been a perfect move.”
Despite Liverpool offering the higher figure, Mauricio Pochettino is keen to welcome Caicedo to his squad in west London. Chelsea’s previous highest offer was believed to be worth £80m.
Redknapp is not sure where Caicedo will end up as Chelsea may not be willing to match Liverpool’s stunning offer. He added:
“I get the attraction of Chelsea, I really do, but in terms of the history of the club, I’m amazed. What is most unbelievable about it is that we’re just a few hours away from the Premier League starting and players don’t know if they’ll be going or staying.”
