Ireland's first viral song is still causing injuries to fans after 26 years.
It's hard to believe that it's been 26 years since B*Witched graced us with their hit song that still inspires us today. The shock return of the beloved Irish girlband has dedicated fans reminiscing about their 90s success, and even attempting to recreate the iconic coordinated dance with varying degrees of success.

The group's unexpected comeback came in the form of a new four-track EP, much to the excitement of their loyal fanbase. And it seems that their fans are just as enamored with their head-bopping debut single, "C'est La Vie," as they were all those years ago – so much so that some have even ended up in the hospital after attempting the famous Irish jig featured in the song.

"We've been fine actually," Edele Lynch told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column. "But I'd say weekly we get a message from somebody who's hurt themselves trying to do the Irish dance." It seems that even without alcohol involved, the dance can still prove to be quite dangerous. "One bride, she broke both her ankles on her wedding day trying to do the jig," Edele added.

But despite the occasional injury, B*Witched's comeback has been met with overwhelming support from fans. Their new EP, titled "Ripped Jeans," features three new songs – "So Into You," "Multiply," and "My Greatest Little Mistake" – as well as the previously released track "Birthday," which came out last year to commemorate their 25th anniversary.

The group, made up of Edele and Keavy Lynch, Lindsay Armaou, and Sinéad O'Carroll, first formed in Dublin in the late 90s and quickly rose to fame with their chart-topping debut in 1998. They even made history as the youngest girl group to have a number one in the UK at the time.

"We were very young," Keavy reflected. "We hadn't really had much experience of the industry other than we were only starting. We were hoping for a Top 20." But much to their surprise, they found out mid-week that they had reached number one in the charts. "We were like, 'Is this a joke?'" Keavy said, laughing. "We never even thought that it might happen. That's not something we were reaching for or thought that we could attain."

After their initial success, B*Witched released their debut album, which featured more popular singles like "Blame It on the Weatherman." Their second and last album, "Awake and Breathe," was released the following year and reached number five in the UK charts. To date, the girls have sold over three million albums worldwide.

The band went their separate ways in 2002, but regrouped in 2013 for the ITV2 reality series "The Big Reunion" and have been together ever since. And part of their success can be attributed to their iconic 90s look – double denim. "For years, we kind of stepped away from the double denim because we were a bit fed up with it," Sinéad admitted. "But then you realize over time that if we're not wearing denim, we might as well not be singing 'C'est La Vie.'"

In fact, the group's double denim look became so iconic that fans would often show up to their shows wearing the same style. "There was a moment where we turned up for this gig when we were rebelling against the denim," Sinéad recalled. "It seemed everybody in the audience was top to toe in denim. Then somebody told us it was a denim party. We were like, 'Oh, we didn't get that memo.' And they were like, 'But you are the memo.'"

As they gear up for their first release since 2014, the girls sat down with The Agency to reflect on their career and the experience of creating music together again. "Do you know what, it was so good," Sinéad said of their reunion. "It was really organic how it all happened because we had done two series of a podcast over lockdown because we all missed each other. Then our old producer literally was just listening to the podcast and I think he just missed being the fifth member of B*Witched. He got on the phone and said he'd love to do something."

And fans couldn't be more excited for the group's return. So if you're feeling nostalgic for some 90s girlband magic, be sure to check out B*Witched's new EP, "Ripped Jeans," and join the millions of fans who are still listening to "C'est La Vie" on repeat.
