In a recent announcement, it was revealed that the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, has taken charge of a committee that has approved an additional central assistance of Rs 1554.99 crore under the National Disaster Response Fund to aid five states that have been severely affected by floods, flash floods, landslides, and cyclonic storms in the year 2024. This assistance aims to provide relief to the people of Andhra Pradesh, Nagaland, Odisha, Telangana, and Tripura.
According to an official statement, out of the total amount, Rs 608.08 crore has been allocated for Andhra Pradesh, Rs 170.99 crore for Nagaland, Rs 255.24 crore for Odisha, Rs 231.75 crore for Telangana, and Rs 288.93 crore for Tripura. In a heartfelt post on social media platform X, Amit Shah expressed his support for those affected by these natural disasters and stated that the Modi government stands strong in their aid. He also mentioned that this additional assistance is in addition to the Rs 18,322.80 crore that has already been released by the Centre to 27 states under the State Disaster Response Fund.
The committee has approved central assistance from the NDRF, subject to an adjustment of 50 per cent of the opening balance for the year that is available in the SDRF. This means that the assistance provided is over and above the funds that have already been released to the states through the State Disaster Response Fund. In the financial year 2024-25, the Centre has released a total of Rs 18,322.80 crore to 27 states through SDRF and Rs 4,808.30 crore through NDRF to 18 states. Additionally, Rs 2208.55 crore has been released through the State Disaster Mitigation Fund to 14 states and Rs 719.72 crore through the National Disaster Mitigation Fund to eight states.
The statement also mentioned that the Centre has taken immediate action by sending Inter-Ministerial Central Teams to these states without waiting for formal memorandums, showcasing their dedication towards providing assistance to those in need. This shows that the government is taking proactive measures to help mitigate the impact of these natural disasters and support the affected people.
