India was thrilled to welcome five new countries to the BRICS family as Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia participated in a key meeting hosted by Russia. Led by senior diplomat Dammu Ravi, the Indian delegation arrived in Nizhny Novgorod, western Russia for the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Monday.
The spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, expressed India's enthusiasm, calling the meeting a significant one for the expanded BRICS group. He also posted about it on social media platform X. This was the first ministerial meeting since the expansion of BRICS in 2023, when the aforementioned five countries joined the existing members - Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
The Indian delegation was headed by Secretary in MEA, Ravi. It is worth noting that such meetings are typically attended by the External Affairs Minister. However, due to S Jaishankar's recent reappointment as External Affairs Minister after the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, he was unable to attend the meeting in Russia.
Russia, which took over the year-long chairmanship of BRICS on January 1, 2024, has planned over 250 events during its presidency. The centerpiece of these events will be the BRICS summit in Kazan in October 2024, according to Russia's official TASS news agency. This highlights the significance of Monday's meeting as it sets the tone for the future of the BRICS group under Russia's leadership.
