The Indian government has successfully compiled a comprehensive list of all the fauna found in the country, totaling to a staggering 1,04,561 species. This remarkable feat has made India the first country in the world to achieve such a milestone. In a grand ceremony held on Sunday in Kolkata to commemorate the 109th Foundation Day of the Zoological Survey of India, the country proudly launched the "Fauna of India Checklist Portal".
During the event, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav expressed his admiration for this monumental achievement and stated that it will establish India as a global leader in documenting biodiversity. He further added that this extensive document will serve as a valuable reference for various experts such as taxonomists, researchers, academicians, conservation managers, and policymakers.
The checklist consists of 121 different categories, encompassing 36 different phyla. Not only that, but it also includes species that are endemic, threatened, and scheduled for protection. The minister emphasized that India is a frontrunner in the conservation of biodiversity, as evident from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first major initiative, "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam", after being re-elected for a third term.
Yadav also highlighted the government's initiatives, such as the International Big Cat Alliance, aimed at preserving various species and their habitats. He proudly mentioned the success of the relocation of cheetahs to India as one of the many achievements in this regard. With such incredible efforts and initiatives, India is leading the way in promoting and protecting its rich and diverse wildlife.
