IIM Indore Director Himanshu Rai: Schools need knowledge, skills, and attitude to thrive in 2023.
Schools are becoming more aware of the role they play in the lives of students, both in and out of the classroom. The return of extracurricular activities, environmental voluntarism, and the celebration of festivals on campus are just some of the ways in which schools are taking these responsibilities seriously. At the same time, schools are also introducing ‘experiential learning’ - a process that helps students gain hands-on experience while also prioritising research.

However, schools should remember that students learn in different ways, and they should be exposed to four or five methods rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. The biggest challenge here is the lack of trained teachers. Schools are reluctant to send their teachers for training as it can take up a lot of time. But in order to make students more curious and engaged, changes cannot be implemented overnight.

Post-Covid, people argued that brick-and-mortar institutions, such as schools, would go away. But that has not been the case. Schools are still essential for peer learning, socialising, and confidence building, and are the perfect place to introduce and nurture empathy, emotional intelligence, civic sense, gender sensitivity, and environmental education. Schools should ensure that students are guided in the right direction, but not be overly directive.

For example, I met some students from West Bengal who were enrolled in our five-year Integrated Programme In Management at the Indian Institute of Management - Indore. Interestingly, I met six other students from the same school who had been enrolled in our IPM the previous year. This is a testament to the fact that the school was doing something right.

The National Education Policy should be implemented so that schools can identify their core concepts and build KSAs (Knowledge, Skills and Attitude). This will help schools improve their system. As Director of the Indian Institute of Management, Indore, and jury member for The FPJ Mumbai Schools Survey 2023, I am committed to working with schools to ensure that students receive the best possible education.
