The days of "growing up" meaning you had to give up on your teenage alt years are gone. It's ok to keep that style going, and there's no reason to have to break up with your largely black wardrobe. But it can be hard to keep up with the times and tweak the style while still looking like an adult.

This is why TikTok is full of fashion content for ageing emos, rockstar girlfriends, and overall alt hotties. Clips of their outfits get thousands of likes and views, proving that there really is no such thing as too much outfit inspo.

But with so much advice out there, it can be hard to know what to listen to. I turned to some fashion experts to dress me in a way that was chic and elder emo, but still appropriate for the nine to five.

Megan Watkins, head stylist with SilkFred, said that leaning into darker colors is key. She said, "What's more chic than black? And with emo or goth fashion deeply steeped in the darkest of hues, making the emo aesthetic work-appropriate doesn't have to be a struggle or a worry."

She suggested wearing office staples like black suit trousers and a cool black shirt. She also added that other hues like deep red or forest green can work in an office setting as well. But Megan also reminded me that the emo aesthetic is about being edgy and not looking like everyone else. She suggested wearing a black shirt in a satin fabric or playing around with silhouettes to stand out from the crowd.

Vivien of @viviensvintage fame said to mix textures and use different fabrics and detailing to elevate a "basic" office outfit. She suggested pairing the outfit with silver jewelry and black boots or loafers, and a black headband.

Mariana Rebelo, a top Depop seller, said to use older emo items and pair them with office basics. She also suggested getting elevated basics with a gothic twist such as a shirt with a big collar, trousers with buckle details, a leather blazer/skirt, or a frilly shirt. She stressed the importance of accessorizing and said to keep it simple. She suggested wearing a statement necklace like a silver cross or rose brooch, and avoiding band Tees, jeans with obvious rips, and micro mini skirts.

With the help of these fashion experts, I was able to dress in a way that was still edgy and true to my style, while also being appropriate for the workplace.
