Earlier this year, Dune: Part Two hit theaters, featuring an all-star cast led by Timothee Chalamet and Josh Brolin. As excitement for the sci-fi epic continues to grow, one of its major stars has issued a bold statement: he will retire from acting if the film's director, Denis Villeneuve, is not recognized at the upcoming Oscars.
Brolin, who plays Gurney Halleck in the first two installments of the Dune franchise, shares the screen with Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, and Rebecca Ferguson. While Part Two was released at the beginning of the year, a third movie is currently in development and a spin-off prequel series is airing on HBO Max.
The first Dune film received 10 Oscar nominations, including a nod for Villeneuve in the best picture and best adapted screenplay categories. However, he ultimately did not win either award. Brolin expressed his disappointment with the decision in a video he shared on Instagram when the nominations were announced.
In his new memoir, titled "From Under the Truck," the Hollywood legend goes even further, threatening to take action if Villeneuve is snubbed once again at next year's ceremony. "If he doesn't get nominated this year, I'll quit acting," Brolin vowed, according to Variety. "It was a better movie than the first one. When I watched it, it felt like my brain was broken open. It's masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they'll recognize him."
The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 17th, with the ceremony taking place in LA on March 2nd. Dune: Part Two has already made over $714 million at the global box office and broke records upon its release, earning the highest Rotten Tomatoes score for any Dune film.
Critics have praised the film as "exhilarating," "breathlessly exciting," and "nearly impossible to look away from." Brolin has been a staple in Hollywood for decades, appearing in films such as American Gangster, Into the Blue, No Country for Old Men, and True Grit. He has also taken on iconic roles, including George W. Bush in W and Thanos in the Avengers franchise, and has made appearances on TV shows like Mister Sterling, 21 Jump Street, and The Young Riders.
If Brolin follows through with his promise and retires from acting after next year's awards season, he will be doing so at a career high. He has been cast in a highly-anticipated film, Wake Up Dead Man, the follow-up to Knives Out and Glass Onion by director Rian Johnson. "I read the script and thought, 'This is so elevated,'" Brolin said. "The writing is supreme. And I got scared. I was like, 'I don't know if I'm good enough to do this. I don't know if I can portray all these subtleties in a way that's organic and authentic.' But I prepped a lot and got ready for it. That would have all looked very different had I been drinking. I don't know if I could have done it."
